
Most developers assume a game feels flat because it doesn’t have enough content. More enemies, more abilities, more progression layers. But players don’t disengage because there’s too little to do. They disengage because nothing in the game resists them. If the player can always move forward without pressure, without limitation, and without meaningful consequence, the experience becomes automatic.
Inputs turn into habits instead of decisions. A system only becomes engaging when it pushes back. Without that resistance, the player isn’t interacting with the game. They’re passing through it.
Friction in Practice
You can see this immediately in modern design patterns. A traversal system with unlimited sprint removes timing decisions. A combat system with instant regeneration removes resource pressure. Frequent checkpoints remove consequence. Clear objective markers remove spatial interpretation. Individually, each of these improves accessibility. Together, they remove the need to think.
Compare two scenarios:
- A player moving through an environment with limited stamina, uncertain enemy positions, and scarce resources must plan, pause, and adapt.
- A player moving through the same space with infinite sprint, constant guidance, and no meaningful penalty simply executes movement.
Both systems “work.” Only one creates engagement. Friction is what forces the player to consider:
- When to act
- Where to position
- Whether to commit or retreat
Without those pressures, the player is no longer solving problems. They are following a path.
Insider Tip: If your player never hesitates, your game has no friction. And if there’s no hesitation, there’s no decision-making.
Removing Friction Breaks Your Game
A common mistake in modern development is removing friction at the feature level without considering the cumulative effect.
- Faster movement improves flow
- Regeneration reduces frustration
- Checkpoints reduce punishment
- Guidance reduces confusion
Each change feels justified. But when combined, they eliminate pressure entirely. The player no longer has to:
- Manage resources
- Read the environment
- Commit to decisions
- Accept consequences
Progress becomes inevitable instead of earned. And when progress is inevitable, engagement drops.
Insider Tip: If every system is designed to “help the player,” none of them are creating meaningful gameplay.
Where Friction Comes From
Friction doesn’t come from individual mechanics. It comes from how systems constrain each other.
- Resource systems limit ability usage
- Movement systems expose positional risk
- Enemy systems apply pressure
- Environmental systems restrict options
When these systems interact, they create tension naturally.

Good Friction vs Bad Friction
Not all friction improves a game. Bad friction feels arbitrary. It confuses the player or breaks internal logic. The player doesn’t understand why something happened, so they disengage. Good friction is clear and consistent. The player understands the rules, even if the outcome is challenging.

The difference is not difficulty. It’s clarity. When players trust the system, they engage with it. When they don’t, they stop trying.

Emergence: Where Friction Creates Depth
When friction is applied across multiple systems, outcomes become more varied and meaningful.

None of these outcomes need to be scripted individually. They emerge because the player is navigating pressure across systems. Without friction, these outcomes collapse into repetition. With friction, they expand into possibility.

Final Thoughts
Your game isn’t shallow because it’s missing something. It’s shallow because nothing is pushing back. Friction creates:
- Stakes
- Trade-offs
- Consequences
Those elements force the player to think. And thinking is what creates engagement. When systems apply pressure, the player has to adapt. When the player adapts, the experience becomes dynamic. And that’s where depth comes from. Without friction, everything works. But nothing matters.
