Using Data to Inform Iterative Design

Data-driven iterative design is key to creating engaging and balanced gameplay experiences. For our game, The Wanderers, we rely heavily on closed beta periods to collect valuable player data, analyse it, and make informed adjustments to improve the game for subsequent beta tests. This ongoing process not only helps refine our design but also ensures that we meet our players’ expectations and deliver a well-rounded gaming experience.

Balancing Combat Mechanics in The Wanderers

To make the most out of our beta periods, it’s crucial to consider what data to collect and how to bundle this data into events efficiently. The collected data should help answer specific design questions and validate our gameplay assumptions. By tracking and analysing this information, we can identify areas that need improvement and make data-driven decisions to enhance the game.

One of the core design intentions in The Wanderers was to ensure that players used ranged shooting, melee attacks, and dodging in an equal ratio during encounters. To validate this design, we tracked the count of shots fired, melee attacks made, and dodges.

Initial Findings:

  • Shooting vs Melee and Dodging: The data revealed a 10:1 ratio between shooting and melee/dodge actions. Players were relying heavily on ranged shooting, which was not the intended experience.

Problem Identification:

  • Infinite Ammo: We quickly identified that the availability of infinite ammo was causing players to prefer shooting over melee and dodging.

Design Adjustment:

  • Ammo Drops from Enemies: To address this, we decided to remove infinite ammo and introduced a mechanic where enemies dropped ammo when defeated using melee attacks. This change was designed to encourage players to engage in melee combat and manage their ammo more strategically.

Results:

  • Improved Ratios: In the next closed beta, we observed that the ratio improved to 3:1, which felt perfect for the intended gameplay experience. Players began to use a more balanced mix of shooting, melee attacks, and dodging.
